Where Not to Extend Your StaySubmitted By Michael - Gig Harbor WA Fall 2003 As a guy who is on the road two to three weeks a month I am always looking for a good place to hang my hat. Extended Stay America seemed just the place especially for an upcoming project that would last 6 months. The first two weeks went great. I had the larger suite which included a kitchenette, bedroom, living room and bath; just the place to spread out after a long day in the trenches. When I was checking out for my visit back home for a week I reserved the same suite for my next 3 week trip with the intent of taking it for six months straight when the project started. So far so good; everything was working out great. To my surprise when I returned a week later they informed me that the suite was currently occupied by a family and that they would be leaving in two days. I thought, that’s okay, I will just check into a normal room and then change to the suite in two days. Two days passed and on my return from work I inquired as to changing rooms to my reserved suite. They informed me that the family extended their stay and may not be leaving for another week. At this I reminded them that I had the suite reserved and would like to know what could be done to move the current occupants to other accommodations. The manager informed me that nothing could be done. Trying to find a solution I offered to pay the difference between MY suite and two rooms for the family. He again refused and would not even consider offering that option to the family at all. Frustrated I went to my room to contemplate my options. Screwed again I thought to myself. At work the next day I mentioned the predicament to my partner who became incensed and immediately got the corporate offices on the phone. Politely he explained the situation and let them know that we were more than willing to commit to a 6 month rental of the suite plus a second room for 6 months for another person. This totaled over $36,000. The corporate office referred us back to the manager at the local property. Once again the stance was to do nothing. There was only one option left, I checked out and have banned Extended Stay America from the corporate stay list. In amazement I thought to myself “What kind of company walks away from $36,000 in hand for $250?” Heck I would have even sent the family to Disneyland for a day on me. All I wanted was the room I had reserved nothing more than the deal that was agreed to. Go figure.
