Affordable Cars on Pinkhook Road in Lafayette Near Broussard…. NOT!

Submitted By Ray, Louisiana

Fall 2005

Here is my Not So Affordable Car Experience.

I saw a car commercial at Affordable One (a local dealer) for $799 down and you drive it off the lot.  I had saved about $1,000 just for this occasion.  Having never have owned a vehicle in my life and growing up without a father I had to do this one on my own.
So off I went to Affordable One on a Saturday and to check out the inventory.  I eye caught this really nice looking 1998 Dodge Dakota v6 magnum green in color, marked at only $8,000.

I was very excited and took it for a test drive with my ex fiancé.  The truck was just what I wanted so I went it to do the paperwork and "credit check" which they said they didn't do.  They allowed me to put $800 down that day and next pay day I went in give them an additional $300 down as my promissory note bringing the total down payment to $1,100.

Everything was fine.  I had a nice vehicle and I was very excited about the deal.

They asked if there was anything I wanted done to the truck as for as maintenance.  I asked for a full tune up, they told me to bring it into GILES on JOHNSTON ST in LAFAYETTE, LA.  So I did just that,

Then the fun began.

The truck was running okay for a day then it started missing.  I looked under the hood myself and found that everything they had listed on the paperwork as changed/brand new was not changed or brand new!  They only changed the spark plugs, not the coil, not the wires, and not the air filter as indicated on the paperwork.  I brought it to their attention and they claimed they did change it, but that they would put newer ones just for me.  Okay I thought, fair enough.

Of course that isn’t what they did at all.  To make a long story short, this truck had to be put in GILES ON JOHNSTON's auto shop 6 times within 2 months.  The with money paid out of my own pocket I took it in to another shop 2 times.  The truck was older than 5yrs at the time so I couldn't take it to court under lemon law.  AFFORDABLE CARS ON PINKHOOK ROAD IN LAFAYETTE, LA told me that I was bound to the lease which went from $8,000 to now a $14,500 buy out.  The truck was financed over 3 years makes sense?  I don't think so.

I found out through a girl that I had made friends with at that dealership that I could return the vehicle and not be penalized for the rest of the lease.  In the end I decided to keep this vehicle even with all the troubles in gave until on one day I was pulling into a drive way and the steering and brakes completely locked up and caused me to hit a telephone pole (this wasn't the first time my safety was at risk with this truck).  At this point i decided to return the vehicle.

I WILL NEVER AGAIN DEAL WITH GILES AUTOMOTIVE ON JOHNSTON ST NOR ANY OTHER GILES. I WILL NEVER AGAIN DEAL WITH ANY AFFORDABLE CARS, RENT TO OWN OR ANY OF IT'S COMPANIES.

Dealing with Car Dealers… Oh how the Deal Changes

Submitted By Cedric , Louisiana

Fall 2005

I went into Hampton Toyota in Lafayette, LA a while back.  I wanted to buy a 2003 Corolla.  After a test drive the dealer told me that he would give me a deferment of 28 days to make my down payment.  I said that sounds great!

All excited about buying my first car we ran my credit and background check.  Since I had no credit history they wanted me to make a $3,000 down payment.  I told the guy I wasn't sure if I could put that much down so he let me take a "24 hr" test drive while I thought it over.  When I got home I calculated and figured that I would be able to give them $2,000 the following week and then the week after that give them the additional $1,000 all within that 28 day period they had promised.

The salesman called and asked if I came to a decision and I told him that if he could do the down payment in two installments with me he had himself a buyer.  Later he called back and said he talked to his sales manager and he said it was okay.  All excited about buying my first car on my own I got went right to the dealership.  The sales manager asked if I was making a cash or credit payment today.  A bit confused I asked him what he was talking about.  He told me that he and his sales guy came to an agreement that if I pay $2,000 that day, that they would then give me the 28 days to make the rest of the down payment.  Needless to say I was devastated and had the salesman drive me home.

I guess it could have been a simple misunderstanding but it sure felt more like the run around.  Anyway, in the end I bought my first vehicle from a different dealership with a much better experience.
